The Sacred Harp, first published in 1844 and in print ever since, is a collection of 590 uniquely American four-part a cappella hymns, odes, and anthems. Though The Sacred Harp was originally compiled in Georgia, the roots of its musical tradition stretch back to early New England with composers like Newbury’s own Jeremiah Ingalls. Printed in shape-note notation to facilitate easier sight-reading, the harmonies are accessible, bold, and sung full voiced in non-performance, participatory events.
Sacred Harp singing is proudly inclusive community singing. It is non-denominational and no religious affiliation is required. No prior experience is necessary and tune books are available for loan or purchase. To learn more about Sacred Harp singing, visit fasola.org.
